The productive old world bluestem — high summer tonnage, better quality than other OWBs, and drought tolerance that holds through July.
SIZEOld World Bluestems include several species of perennial warm-season grasses introduced from Eastern Europe and Asia from as early as 1917. Since that time, more introductions have been made from Russia, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey. These various species are adapted to a wide variety of soils but prefer clay loam and loam soils.
Heavy summer forage production per acre.
Holds feed value later into maturity than other OWBs.
Survives and produces through extended dry stretches.
Performs on modest fertility once the stand is established.
A long-lived perennial stand with proper grazing management.
Peak production when cool-season pasture is dormant.
Slow to establish — control weeds and be patient the first year.
