SUMMARY

Switchgrass is a native, warm-season, perennial, tall grass that reproduces from seed and rhizomes. Switchgrass is categorized as either upland or lowland. Upland types are typically shorter and generally found on upland sites with lower fertility and drier conditions. Lowland types can reach 8 to 10 feet tall, are very robust, and found in moister low areas with high fertility.

01

LOWLAND TYPE

Taller, coarser, higher-yielding than upland switchgrass types.

02

HIGH TONNAGE

Among the highest dry-matter yields of any native warm-season grass.

03

WILDLIFE COVER

Dense, upright growth provides outstanding nesting and winter escape cover.

04

EROSION CONTROL

Deep fibrous roots anchor waterways, buffers, and erodible slopes.

05

WARM-SEASON NATIVE

Peak production through summer months when cool-season grasses slump.

06

DROUGHT HARDY

Once established, thrives with minimal inputs through heat and dry spells.

07

CONSERVATION READY

A staple species for CRP, buffer, and NRCS conservation plantings — check program specs for approved varieties and rates.
