[Enid, OK], On November 30 at the Oklahoma Governor’s Water Conference in Norman, Johnston Seed Company was honored to receive the prestigious 2023 Water for 2060 Excellence Award in the agriculture category. The award, presented annually, recognizes exceptional efforts in water conservation, efficiency, and reuse, aligning with the goals set by the Water for 2060 legislation passed in 2012.
The Water for 2060 legislation aims to achieve the statewide goal of using no more fresh water in 2060 than was used in 2010, emphasizing the significance of conservation and sustainable water practices. Since 2017, outstanding water systems and agricultural producers have been acknowledged for their dedication to water preservation and forward-thinking planning.
This year’s award was particularly special as it was presented to a business within the agriculture sector, showcasing the importance of innovative and sustainable practices in the industry. Johnston Seed Company stood out for its remarkable contributions to the 2023 Cover
Crop Seed Project, which distributed over 4 million pounds of cover crop seeds to 44 counties in Oklahoma over the past five years.
Trey Lam, from the Conservation Commission, nominated Johnston Seed Company for their exceptional commitment to promoting cover crops as a crucial conservation tool. Lam highlighted the company's consistent efforts and significant impact on sustainable agriculture in Oklahoma. At the event there were approximately 350 attendees, including legislators, water providers, agricultural producers, and state, federal, and local officials.
The award was presented on behalf of Governor Kevin Stitt by Ken McQueen, Oklahoma Secretary of Energy and Environment.
